In part one of 'Perfecting Your Skills to Help Master Mindful Eating' I covered two of the main skills needed to master this art. By practising mindful eating, you can enter into the final battle round with problematic eating - win! It is possible with mindful eating to lower your blood sugar, lose weight and even reverse your Type 2 diabetes.
Being in the Moment. When you become good at something, you generally don't have to do much conscious thinking, i.e. brushing your teeth or driving your car, to complete the task at hand. Hence it is easy to not be in the moment, but once this crosses over and starts happening whilst eating - it is dangerous and one of the underlying reasons people then start to eat mindlessly. To avoid mindless eating, ensure you and your mind are both present when you sit down to eat - so you can make conscious, mindful decisions about what to eat and when to eat it.
Mindless Environmental Triggers. Are your food cupboards stocked full of junk food? Do you watch television including the adverts that advertise both junk food and the latest diet pill? If yes, these are just a small handful of ways your environment will keep feeding your mindless eating. Turn the television off at the adverts, and simply ban purchasing junk food when you are in the supermarket - being mindful and present when you shop.
Stop Judging Yourself. Not everything has to be labelled as good or bad - in fact, sometimes it can simply be neutral. So you might feel the need to...
  • scrutinize every single bite of food you take, and
  • criticize the way you eat.

Instead mindfulness teaches you to accept things are the way they are, and by doing this you allow yourself to see the true nature of the way you eat. Only once this happens can you really notice your eating patterns in a compassionate way you can accept and then go about changing them.
Letting Go. Many of us have secret desires when it comes to our body that just may not ever manifest. Often this includes being able to wear much smaller clothes. But sometimes we simply have to be honest and accept who we are now and stop letting thoughts of who we wish we were, hold us back. The real focus once this challenge has been achieved, can then be how to cope with food cravings, and eventually letting them go as well. Facing them is often easier than you realize, and in turn, by focusing on them you will reduce your need to eat unhealthy foods to heal your emotions. This is often how people deal with emotional issues - running from facing the problem and filling up on food to heal their problem.
Acceptance. When was the last time you accepted yourself? The way you look? The size clothes you wear? Acceptance involves being okay with the way things are. It does not mean you may like the way they are, or agree with the situation - but by being okay with it, you are acknowledging the situation and can deal with it. Too much time is spent by all of us, especially in the situation of mindless eating, being stuck stewing over things we can't change. But you can change the future - you just need to free up some head space to be able to do so.
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

Type 2 Diabetes - Perfect These Skills to Help Master Mindful Eating, Part 1

You are the master of your own destiny - and this includes as a Type 2 diabetic tackling your problems with eating and not being able to ditch the junk food for healthy food that you know will help stabilize your blood sugar levels. Without resolving the fact you continue to eat when full, you don't eat enough, constantly diet, binge when stressed, or use food to resolve emotional issues, and the many problems with food a person can have - your life will forever be mediocre and underwhelming to say the least. It is possible with mindful eating to lower your blood sugar, lose weight and even reverse your Type 2 diabetes.

You are the master of your own destiny - and this includes as a Type 2 diabetic tackling your problems with eating and not being able to ditch the junk food for healthy food that you know will help stabilize your blood sugar levels.
Without resolving the fact...
  • you continue to eat when full,
  • you don't eat enough,
  • you constantly diet,
  • binge when stressed, or
  • use food to resolve emotional issues, and
  • the many problems with food a person can have -

your life will forever be mediocre and underwhelming to say the least. It is possible with mindful eating to lower your blood sugar, lose weight and even reverse your Type 2 diabetes.
Is it any wonder rates of depression are soaring for people with Type 2 diabetes? Not only is this in part due to the fact they often have secondary complications to deal with such as kidney disease, heart disease and leg ulcers that can end up being so severe they cause the person to have to remove a limb.
Time after time, people with diabetes are told to eat better - and are given handouts to help encourage it. But this isn't proving successful in the majority of cases. This is because the root cause of problems with eating healthily is far more complex than a handout can cover. And the root cause can vary from person to person living with Type 2 diabetes or not. So the approach needs to be very individual.
Mindful eating practises is the answer to most problem eating faced by anyone with or without a particular health condition. Here are the skills you need to be perfecting daily to really begin tackling problematic eating - which in short can be summed up as any type of eating that is damaging your health.
Awareness. The starting point and most important aspect of mindful eating. Dieting over many years is not only harmful to your thyroid it can also make you less able to respond to your body's signals. For instance, when you diet and are not being mindful - you notice the taste of food too much. But when you start being mindful and aware at every meal time, eventually you start to not even notice the taste of the food you eat frequently.
Observation. By observing the thoughts that pop into your head about food, you will learn to be aware of the pattern of thought that leads you to eat mindlessly. This skill takes time to perfect because it requires you to be non-judgemental of the thoughts that appear in your head. You simply need to 'listen' to them and let them come and go without acting on them. You are the master of your mind, thoughts and food you choose to eat.
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

Type 2 Diabetes - The Serious Effect of Low HDL Cholesterol in Diabetics

Heart and blood vessel disease is one of the most serious complications of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetic patients are two and a half times more likely than nondiabetics to have diseases of the heart and blood vessels, including strokes. Strokes occur when a blood vessel supplying oxygen and sugar to the brain either become blocked or bleeds, depriving the brain of oxygen and energy. When a blockage causes a stroke it is called an ischemic stroke. According to an article published in Lipids, Health and Disease in November 2014, scientists at Nanjing University Medical School in China compared the HDL levels in both diabetic patients and nondiabetics to learn how arteries in the brain become blocked.
It was found...
  • among Type 2 diabetics, those with low HDL cholesterol, had more than twice the risk of ischemic stroke than diabetics with high HDL levels.
  • among those diabetics over 70, the risk was more than 6 times higher in the low HDL group.
  • among the nondiabetic participants, no such association was found.

High density lipoprotein or HDL, go through the bloodstream picking up cholesterol and taking it to the liver. The liver then breaks down the cholesterol, lowering the level of total cholesterol and LDL, or light density lipoprotein, cholesterol complexes. Mayo Clinic in the United States recommends 60 mg/dl as a healthy HDL level.
Effective ways to increase HDL levels include...
  • losing extra body fat,
  • increasing physical activity, and
  • eating healthful foods.

For overweight or obese people, losing 6 pounds can raise HDL as much as 1 mg/dl. Aerobic exercise such as
  • riding a bike,
  • walking,
  • swimming,
  • playing an active sport, or
  • raking leaves for a half hour a day,

help to raise your HDL levels.
Eating foods made with olive oil, peanut oil, nuts, whole wheat, or flax seeds and avoiding animal fats is also helpful, as is not smoking.
When you substitute flax seeds for eggs you lower your cholesterol two ways. The flax seeds contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which help to lower cholesterol, and you avoid adding more cholesterol to your diet in the form of egg yolks.
Try making healthful scones with a recipe from the website http://www.PriyaEasynTastyRecipes.blogspot.com where Priya uses whole wheat flour, rolled oats, baking powder, baking soda, oil, water, sugar (could be substituted), almond milk, chocolate chips (optional), and ground flax seeds. http://www.Rawon10.com suggests making burgers with red pepper, ground flax seeds, mushrooms, walnuts, white onion, jalapeno pepper, celery, and olive oil.
Here's to your health.
Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. By making easy changes to your daily routine, its possible to protect your heart, kidneys, eyes and limbs from the damage often caused by diabetes, and eliminate some of the complications you may already experience.

Tips to Beat Diabetes - Drink More Coffee?

Diabetes is all too common in the United States, yet it is entirely preventable. Studies have shown that almost 25% of all Americans have prediabetes, which is a health problem that includes elevated blood sugar levels to potentially cause diabetes in 10 years.
Out of these 25% of Americans, only 4% may be aware of this risk. Of those who are aware, less than 50% attempt to make a difference by eating less, losing weight, and increasing how much they exercise. Those are just a few of the habits you need to reverse prediabetes to make sure that you do not develop the full-blown illness, which could result in blood sugar monitoring and drugs for a lifetime. Diabetes will also increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and other scary health issues. Luckily, there are specific things that you can do to beat this illness, starting with your cup of Joe each day.
Harvard School of Public Health did a study of 126,210 men and women who were heavy daily coffee drinkers at up to 6 cups per day. Those that drank 6 cups of coffee each day had a 29% to 54% reduced risk of developing type II diabetes over 18 years. Those that drank 4 to 5 cups of coffee each day reduced their diabetes risk by 29%, while those that drank 1 to 3 cups of coffee each day had no benefit whatsoever. There were no results provided by drinking decaffeinated coffee. Caffeine and other products, like soda, chocolate, and tea, could also reduce this risk. The researchers from this study determined that caffeine helps to boost the metabolism, and coffee also contains potassium, antioxidants, magnesium, and a large dose of caffeine to help the cells absorb sugar in the body.
When you are considering how much coffee to drink daily, keep in mind that drinking a 16 ounce cup of Joe from Starbucks is actually equivalent to 2 cups of standard coffee, according to this study. This also means that you would only need to drink three coffee beverages from a chain like Starbucks to meet the requirement of reducing your diabetes risk by 50%. Of course, make sure not to shoot yourself in the foot by adding heavy amounts of cream and sugar to your coffee, which will derail your diet completely. If you love the taste of coffee, it is better to drink it black because it has almost no calories and will offer you the caffeine and antioxidants you need to reduce your risk for this illness every day.
Lastly, make it your priority to regulate your weight to continue to reduce your risk for diabetes. Even if you lost 10 pounds, it could reduce your risk of diabetes. Extremely overweight people are 70% less likely to get diabetes if they lose only 5% of their total body weight, which is the first step in the right direction to maintaining a healthy weight, reducing your diabetes risk, and protecting your health for the long haul!

Diabetes and Alcohol - Can Diabetics Drink Socially?

http://diabetesadvicessite.blogspot.com/
Can diabetics drink alcohol? How about an occasional beer with the guys or a glass of wine with the gals? Learn about diabetics and social drinking.

Diabetes and Alcohol - Can Diabetics Drink Socially? Diabetes and Alcohol - Can Diabetics Drink Socially?
By Samantha Deerborne
Diabetes and alcohol - hardly sounds like a good match, does it? Reality is, real life tends to involve alcohol occasionally. Family gathering, social events, cook-outs...all common places where the drinks are flowing. So, can diabetics drink socially?
Diabetics who treat their disease with insulin shots or pills run a definite risk of suffering from low-blood sugar after consuming alcohol. However, social drinking (with your doctors ok) can most-likely be tolerated if:
a) Your doctor agrees
b) You have an occasional drink
c) You never drink on an empty stomach
Most important out of all the above factors is having an open discussion with your doctor about your diabetes and discussing the possibility of you consuming alcohol in a social environment. Your doctor knows your diabetic situation better than anyone and his/her decision should be well-respected. Your doctor should be viewed as your partner as you deal with life as a diabetic. Let him help you make good choices for your over-all lifestyle.
Also important to note is that the term 'social drinking' for a diabetic does NOT mean 'party all night'. We are discussing the possibility of having one, maybe two drinks, in the occasional social situation. Due to the way the body, mainly the liver, reacts to alcohol in your bloodstream, it is important to practice moderation and make smart choices for your health. Being healthy is much more important than having a beer at your local sports bar, isn't it?
To protect against low-blood sugar, be sure to eat before, or while, you are enjoying your adult beverage. You will need to give your body help in order to process the alcohol and aid your liver. The liver sees alcohol as poison and reacts in an adverse way that could greatly effect diabetics. Your liver won't send out glucose to your body until it has dealt with the alcohol..and that could be a bad night for you.
As long as your doctor agrees your diabetes is under control, you only indulge occasionally, and you never eat on an empty stomach, you should be able to drink socially - even as a diabetic.

The watermelon is one of the juiciest fruits on earth. It contains a very large quantity of water which brings about a cooling effect especially during the summer season. A watermelon is very rich in potassium, carotenoid, sodium antioxidants, lycopene, Vitamin A, B1, B6 and C, magnesium, citrulline, amino acids, arginine and other phytonutrients.

If you can manage it, a reduction of 5 to 10% in body weight will make your Type 2 diabetes substantially easier to manage, reducing your HbA1c by 1 and 2% on average. If you are able to follow a lower carbohydrate diet plan, the results in terms of...
  • reduction in insulin resistance,
  • improvements in blood sugar levels, and
  • other problems linked to excess weight such as high blood pressure,

can be spectacular.
So, if you're looking to start on a lower carb diet plan, one thing you may be taking into account is how you can satisfy your cravings, without sacrificing taste.
Far too many people think low carbohydrate dieting has to mean nothing but meat and vegetables, and while those are the two primary foods you will be eating on this plan, those are not the only foods you can eat.
Here are a few ways to cut back on carbs - without sacrificing some of your favorite dishes...
1. Use Spaghetti Squash For Pasta. First, consider swapping out your normal pasta for some spaghetti squash instead. If you crave the taste of pasta day in and day out, this will easily satisfy those taste buds.
Spaghetti squash is slightly higher in carbs than other vegetables, but still low enough that it should easily be able to fit on any lower carbohydrate diet plan.
Cover it with some low sodium tomato sauce - rather than alfredo - to keep the health content in check.
2. Make An Almond Flour Pizza Crust. Next up, also consider preparing an almond flour pizza crust. Almond flour can be used in many of your favorite recipes to replace regular whole wheat flour, so is an excellent substitute that will keep your diet and stable blood sugar on track.
Then top the pizza with lean proteins, vegetables, and some lower fat cheese for added calcium and you'll be all set with a well-balanced meal.
Note the almond flour will increase the total fat content of this meal, so it is something to keep in mind. Make sure you balance out the other meals in the plan to accommodate.
3. Replace Berries For Bananas In Smoothies. Finally, if you're missing out on the protein smoothie you always started your day with since you can no longer have that frozen banana, not to fear, you can still enjoy the delicious taste of the smoothie with some berries instead.
While berries do contain some carbs, they contain far less than a banana and will still give your drink the same icy texture you enjoy.
So there you have some smart strategies to remember if you are aiming to lower your carbohydrate intake and see success on your low carb and fat burning plan. It really doesn't need to be as challenging as you may have believed as long as you put into place some smart strategies.
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

Diabetes is a disease known since antiquity. Recently however, the morbidity of this condition has been particularly high. Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome, caused by the complete or partial deficiency in insulin secretion. Simply put, the body of a diabetic is incapable of producing insulin. Thus, the body can not convert the food into energy. Genetic predisposition seems to play an important role in diabetes, but that does not mean that it is always a hereditary disease.
So, how can you cure diabetes naturally with foods?
If you are overweight it would be a good idea to lose some excessive weight. It's very important to follow some simple guidelines. Remember that the only way to lose weight is to eat less food than your body needs for your daily activities. If until now your favourite food has been french fries, then you might want to change your habits gradually and not overnight. Often, you will find that you can still eat your favourite foods, but choose more healthy versions of them. A well balanced diet will allow you to control your diabetes and will ensure the effectiveness of your medication. The following list will give you an idea of the foods that should be included in your meals:
Breakfast:
  • Skimmed milk
  • Artificial sweeteners, instead of sugar
  • Cereals rich in fiber, like bran flakes
  • Bread made of wholegrain flour
  • Polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats
  • Jam low in sugar
  • Fresh fruits
  • Dietary, fat-free yogurt

Lunch - Snacks - Dinner
  • Potatoes cooked with their skin, beans, low fat cheese
  • Fresh or canned fruit in its natural juice
  • Small amounts of lean meat or fish - remove the fat, and avoid frying
  • Include some starchy food - pasta, ricee
  • At least two servings of vegetables - try to include peas and beans, as often as possible
  • Jelly or cream with no added sugar

As you can see, a healthy diet means the good combination of healthy foods and the avoidance of food that can be more harmful than beneficial.
Each meal should meet the following requirements:
  • Two-fifths of your plate should consist of starchy foods, preferably high in fiber.
  • Two-fifths of your plate should consist of vegetables, salads or fruits.
  • The remaining one-fifth of your plate should be a source of protein, such as meat, fish, eggs, beans or cheese.

By following these guidelines, the levels of your blood sugar should remain within the desired limits.
